Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett is calling on aspiring young leaders to apply to represent the region in the 2018 Queensland Youth Parliament.

Mr Bennett said the program was a great opportunity for young people to stand up and take part in the democratic process.

“The YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament is a wonderful program that gives young people valuable skills and experience to help prepare them to become future community leaders,” he said.

“This fantastic program has a long history of providing young people with unrivalled opportunities for personal development, civic engagement and employment pathways.

“The practical program develops debating, negotiating and leadership skills and participants then put these skills to the test at Parliament House in Brisbane.

“Youth members get an insider’s look at what it’s like to be a parliamentarian, learning about parliamentary rules, writing bills and debating them in the parliamentary chamber.”
Youth members are selected on a number of factors including regional and remote representation, diversity, enthusiasm and personal development potential.

Mr Bennett said young people aged between 15 and 25 years should apply for a seat in the Youth Parliament by Friday, February 23.
