Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Stephen Bennett took an oath on White Ribbon Day to stand up, speak out and act to prevent men’s violence against women.

The Member for Burnett has urged everyone in the Agnes Water and 1770 region to take the same oath and act to stop domestic violence and abuse before it happens.

“The day is all about speaking out, and not simply standing by,” Mr Bennett said.

“While I’m really proud of the Agnes Water community for hosting such a successful White Ribbon Day event.

“It was great to be able to attend the event and offer my thoughts and advice on the issue as the Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence.

“Violence against women continues to plague Australia, Queensland and our region.

“The latest police statistics to the end of October show there have been over 1,880 breaches of Domestic Violence Protection Orders in the Wide Bay.

“That’s an increase of 142 on the previous year.

“One in three women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence perpetrated by someone known to them.

“We cannot become numb to these statistics as one of these numbers could be your friend next door, the lady serving you in the super market, even your child’s school mate.

“This week in particular I encourage everyone to do their part to raise awareness about the terrible realities of violence that far too many women are forced to live through.”
