The Member for Burnett is calling for greater government spending transparency following questionable transactions across the Burnett.

Stephen Bennett MP tabled two Questions on Notice relating to a $42 million spend on the Isis Highway and a $15 million spend on state-owned land.

Mr Bennett said it’s his job to ensure taxpayers money is spent conscientiously.

“Dozens of people have come to me, asking for clarification, so it’s only fair we know what’s in the public purse and how and why it’s being spent,” he said.

“More government spending transparency would enable us to save money, prevent corruption and reduce potential waste and abuse of taxpayer dollars; it’s a win win.”

Mr Bennett asked the Minister for Health and Ambulance Services:

Will the Minister explain why $15m is needed in the budget to purchase the preferred site for the proposed Bundaberg Hospital redevelopment when the land identified is already state-owned land?

Mr Bennett asked the Minister for Transport and Main Roads:

With reference to heavy rain in early July causing significant damage to the newly completed road surface on the Isis Highway— Will the Minister advise the cost of repairing these works, and the impact on the $42m funding allocation for Isis Highway safety upgrades?

“With above-average rainfall predicted this spring and summer it’s vital our state roads are up to scratch,” said Mr Bennett.

“In July, we were lucky enough to see a small amount of heavy rain, but the first thing I noticed after this event was the state of the Isis Highway.

“The highway had just undergone safety upgrades to the tune of $42 million, but a small amount of rain caused significant damage to the new surface, with potholes returning and shoulders washed away.

“Why did a $42 million dollar project get effectively washed away over night? How many other ‘road safety works’ were completed to this standard? And how much did these repairs cost on top of the $42M?”

Mr Bennett said the same transparency should be shown over the purchase of state-owned land for the proposed Bundaberg Hospital.

“So far, despite many queries, we’re yet to see an answer as to why the State Labor Government needs to give itself $15 million to purchase a piece of land it allegedly already owns.

“It’s vital we see funds spent in a responsible way and sadly these two instances have raised more questions than answers.

“Queensland residents deserve to know how their tax is being spent which is why I will always ask for transparency and openness.”
