Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett is driving a campaign to upgrade dangerous intersections across the Burnett this National Road Safety Week.
Mr Bennett said the State Labor Government is failing children by ignoring the Bargara community’s urgent pleas for action at the Bargara-Hughes Road Intersection.
“The dangers at this intersection are not going away; they’re getting worse,” he said.
“Every few weeks I’m contacted by motorists who witness near misses or crashes at this intersection.
“Every few weeks I write to the Minister for Transport or his department to plead for an upgrade.
“The response is always the same; there’s no money and no plans.
“I’m terrified that if we don’t see action soon, the next accident could tear our community apart.
“This Road Safety Week I’m calling Minister Bailey out.
“I’m calling him out for his irresponsible conduct and failure to protect our children who cross near this intersection twice a day.”
Mr Bennett said he’s also naming and shaming the Minister for his failure to follow through on promised intersection upgrades right across the Burnett.
“The region was promised an upgrade to the dangerous Winfield Road intersection in 2020; three years on and the design is still yet to be finalised,” he said.
“There’s nowhere near enough visibility along Bundaberg-Miriam Vale Road, there are no over-taking lanes and there are very few places where it is safe to pull over.
“The same stands for intersections and overtaking lanes along the Isis Highway.
“The Minister is not listening to the people on the ground.
“Our regional state roads are dangerous; we need urgent action before it’s too late.”
