Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett has reminded the Minister for Water of his promise to fix the failed Paradise Dam, 10 years on from the devastating 2013 floods.
Mr Bennett said he will hold the government to account and ensure the ‘biggest infrastructure fail in Australia’s history’ is fixed after it was torn down in 2020.
“In 2013, flooding ripped through the region, damaging the dam and causing major disruptions to our agriculture industry,” he said.
“It’s been 10 years but we’re still waiting for repairs.
“These delays have cost the region significantly; investments have been stalled and crops have been ripped.
“This is all due to the uncertainty created by delays and Labor’s mixed messaging around safety and repairs.
“We’ve now been promised enabling works for the project will start in 2023.
“I will be doing everything in my power to ensure these works meet the deadline so our region can plan for the future.”
Mr Bennett said growers are asking for truth and transparency following a raft of setbacks and challenges.
“Since September 2019 we have been battling drought conditions, worker shortages, Covid restrictions and serious fears around Paradise Dam,” he said.
“I and many others won’t be sleeping properly until the day the dam is fully restored and full of water.
“It’s been ten years of uncertainty around this dam, and three years since the Palaszczuk Government ripped down the wall.
“$1.2 billion of taxpayer’s money is set to be spent to fix Labor’s mess.
“It’s vital the spend is scrutinised and the project meets the timeline.”
