Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett has welcomed State Government funding for local agriculture shows after a long-fought campaign.

$2 million will be shared across 129 shows under the Show Societies Grants Program during 2022-23.

Mr Bennett said he’s thrilled to finally see our local shows get the recognition they deserve.

“Our shows are a place for people to come together to enjoy what our community has to offer, to display their work and talents, and most importantly a place to support one and other after a difficult few years,” he said.

“They are part of the fabric of our small communities and this funding comes as a huge relief.

“The last few years have been tough, I’d like to thank all the show societies, members, and volunteers who joined me in our fight to see our shows continue in 2022.

“Despite government mandates, inconsistent messaging, and pandemics, the 2022 shows have been a huge success, enjoyed by thousands of people across the State.”

The annual funding will range from $5,000 for small show societies to $150,000 for the likes of the Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland to conduct the Ekka.

Mr Bennett said the funding will help support operating costs with most local shows run by a committee of volunteers.

“In an average year, Queensland agricultural shows attract 16 million people and represent a $141 million direct economic contribution to local communities.

“It’s great to see the State Government finally come to the table and show our Agricultural Shows the respect and recognition they deserve.”
