Two local surf life saving clubs have scored themselves $100,000 each to upgrade facilities through the third round of the Get Playing grants program.
Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said the local clubs had shared in more than $11.4 million worth of funding, approved to almost 140 clubs statewide under the latest round.
Get Playing forms part of the Queensland Government’s $68 million Get in the Game initiative, and provides sport and recreation clubs with better facilities.
Mr Bennett said the Bundaberg Surf Life Saving Club secured $100,000 to upgrade their clubhouse to include amenities with additional toilet and shower facilities for members, and Moore Park Surf Life Saving Club received the same amount to construct an equipment storage facility.
“Surf life saving clubs are an integral part of this community, so it’s important that they are equipped with the infrastructure and facilities they need to carry out their duties,” Mr Bennett said.
“Get in the Game is focused on promoting greater participation at the grassroots community level and supporting local clubs and this funding will help achieve that in the Burnett electorate,” he said.
The surf life saving clubs are two of four local clubs in the Burnett which received a total of $300,954 in Get Playing funding to improve their infrastructure and facilities.
Additional Burnett clubs which have received funding through this round include:
• Guides Queensland ($5626) to construct a half-court for basketball and handball for girl guides at Mon Repos
• Mountain Biking Bundaberg ($95,328) to construct mountain bike trails, shade shelter and amenities block
Mr Bennett said he was keen to encourage more families to get involved in sport and recreation, which is exactly what the Queensland Government’s Get in the Game initiative achieves.
“Get in the Game is focused on promoting greater participation at the grassroots community level and supporting local clubs and this funding will help achieve that in the Burnett electorate,” he said.
Mr Bennett said the Get in the Game initiative was the Queensland Government’s way to deliver on its commitment to get more young people involved in recreation and sport.
Sport and Recreation Minister Steve Dickson said the response to Get Playing had been overwhelming, and projects that had been delivered under this program had made a real difference to local communities.
“It’s pleasing to see the positive outcomes resulting from the first two rounds of funding and I look forward to seeing more improvements to our sport and recreation clubs statewide,” Mr Dickson said.
