Local leaders and community members have called for a road safety review outside Elliott Heads State School with a 100km/h road potentially putting students at risk.

Some students must cross Elliott Heads road twice a day and Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said it’s simply far too dangerous.

“The safety of children walking to and from school is paramount,” he said.

“When a car is traveling at 100 km/h there are no second chances, there is no second guessing, there is no stopping.

“It’s sickening knowing primary school children must cross this road to get to their school, with no safety precautions.

“I’m calling on the Minister to conduct an urgent review of the speed limit on this section of road before we see a tragedy.

“Cr Scott Rowleson and I have both written to the minister, requesting immediate action.

“Elliott Heads is an expanding community, which is reflected by the rise in students, their safety must be put at the top of the priority list.”

Bundaberg Regional Councillor Scott Rowleson said he’s been contacted by many concerned parents about general road safety in and around the school.

“As the local Council representative for this area, I do agree that the speed should be decreased permanently from 100km/h to 80 km/h just slightly north of the Breusch Rd intersection, through to the Saunders St-Elliott Heads Rd Junction to the south,” he said.

“A number of families walk across Elliott Heads Rd on a daily basis during school days, this safety review needs to be prioritised.”
