Today Bundaberg Police teamed up with MP’s David Batt and Stephen Bennett, local cycling groups and the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) for Queensland Road Safety Week, with today’s focus being about cyclist safety.

The police escorted ride involving 30 riders, began at the Bundaberg CBD, along Bourbong Street and finishing at the Bundaberg Cycling Club velodrome on Powers Street.

The group was made up of TMR representatives, Qld junior representative cyclists, police officers, MP David Batt and even 78-year old Bundaberg local Peter!

The event was about promoting safety for cyclists, as in addition to motorists they are legitimate road users and have the right to be treated with courtesy and care by others.

These are just a few simple tips for motorists for keeping our cyclists safe.
•Actively look out for bicycle riders
•Leave a safe distance when passing bicycle riders ?When the speed limit is 60km/h or under, motorists must leave a gap of at least 1 metre between their vehicle and bicycle riders when passing.
?When the speed limit is over 60km/h the gap must be at least 1.5 metre

•Be patient – wait until it’s safe to pass a rider
•Give way when required – treat bicycle riders like any other vehicle
