Bruce Highway distance signageFamilies travelling on Queensland’s roads will soon find it safer and easier following the first round of state-wide speed limit review results announced by the State Government.

The changes will vastly improve safety and ensure better consistency of speed limits.

We want families doing the school run or people going to work to be safe.

Any death on our roads in one too many and, after considering all feedback from the Burnett community, we’re more determined than ever to work towards keeping the road toll down.

After more than 3,300 Queenslanders had their say on speed limits across the state’s highways, motorways and roads, we’re making sure their thoughts and concerns are heard.

It’s just another example of how the Queensland Government is listening and delivering on its promise to provide a stronger plan for a brighter future.

In my electorate, the results showed that most respondents think the speed limit on the Bruce Highway from Kolan River to Miriam Vale is too low. We’re conducting a road safety audit on this stretch of the highway to see if it’s safe to increase the speed limit.

Everyone who responded to the review of Bundaberg Port Road said there were too many speed limit changes. We’ve looking at whether to reduce the speed from the Port Road into Burnett Heads to improve safety for local drivers.

Too many speed limit changes was the complaint from people driving on Elliott Heads Road. We’re still reviewing the situation on this road, and the results will be out in the near future.

Engineers and police examined every road under review in line with Queensland’s speed limit guidelines, taking careful consideration of the traffic, pedestrians and surrounding infrastructure on Burnett’s roads.

Out of the 100 Queensland roads shortlisted from community feedback, results from the first 20 roads reveal 11 roads will remain the same speed limit, six will increase and three will decrease.

Speed limits on a number of roads will remain the same following advice from safety experts.

Other changes include:

  • Increasing the speed limit on sections of Williamson Road and Greensward Road in Tamborine from 60km/h to 70km/h.
  • Reducing the 80km/h zone on Olsen Avenue between Smith Street and Southport-Nerang Road to 70km/h, creating one speed zone through this entire section.
  • Reducing the Scenic Highway between Yeppoon and Emu Park Road to 60km/h, ensuring a safer drive on this hilly terrain.

The speed review is one of 60 actions announced last year as part of the Newman Government’s $350 million, two-year Road Safety Action Plan.

The results for the remaining 80 roads, including 3 in Burnett, will be released over the coming months. For more information visit: www.tmr.qld.gov.au/speedlimitreview.
