The Moore Park Beach community has called for a safe swimming area following multiple shark sightings last year.
The member for Burnett Stephen Bennett has supported a petition that has asked the State Government back the construction and maintenance for a suitable enclosed swimming area near the Moore Park Surf Life Saving Club.
“Over the years there have been many people approach us about what a safe swimming area might look like at Moore Park Beach,” he said.
“It’s the community’s opinion that it would increase safety for our nippers and beach goers as well as increase visitation to Moore Park Beach with the area already a choice destination for tourists.
“We are always happy to support the community and often see success when an issue is raised and supported by residents.”
Principal Petitioner Cheryl Hay has launched the initiative after speaking to many beachgoers who are not comfortable swimming in the area.
Mr Bennett said Mrs Hay must be congratulated.
“I know she has put a lot of work and research in to this petition,” he said.
“While we understand that further discussions about what a safe swimming area will mean for the marine life, particularly our nesting sea turtles are necessary.
“There are many issues to work thorough regarding maintenance and management and we are also conscious that environment approvals would need to be addressed and met.”
Burnett MP Stephen Bennett said the LNP believes people should always be put before sharks.
“It was more than disappointing to recently see the Palaszczuk Government suspend our shark control program,” he said.
“The drumline program is a program that has protected our beaches and waterways for almost 60 years.
“It’s a sad day for Queensland when Annastacia Palaszczuk puts sharks before the safety of people.”
