Two flood damaged sporting clubs will be able to get back on their feet more quickly with the first round of grants in the Newman Government’s $1 million disaster recovery fund.
Member for Burnett, Stephen Bennett announced that the Bargara Golf Club and Sandy Hook Ski Club are among the first 18 clubs to receive grants under the Sport and Recreation Disaster Recovery program, with many more expected in coming weeks.
Mr Bennett said the funding would be vital in assisting the Golf and Ski Clubs to rebuild.
“The Golf Club sustained damage to their greens, bunkers and irrigation equipment. $25,000 will go a long way towards helping to fix the damage, and install much needed drainage.
”I saw first-hand the devastation at the Ski Club as the waters subsided. It’s great to give them a hand up to replace equipment and repair damage to the clubhouse facilities.
“Our grassroots sporting and recreation clubs are the backbone of our communities and with this funding the Newman Government is helping ensure they can get back to business as soon as possible,” Mr Bennett said.
Mr Bennett said organisations can still apply for grants up to $25,000 under the Sport and Recreation Disaster Recovery Program, to replace much needed equipment and repair clubhouses and grounds.
“With winter sports seasons kicking off soon we need to see Bundaberg and Burnett clubs fully operational as soon as possible,” he said.
“I understand many clubs are still waiting on damage assessments in order to complete their funding applications and strongly encourage them to apply for this support once these are received. Applications will remain open until Friday 10 May 2013.
“Sport and recreation clubs are a vital part of our local communities, particularly in smaller rural and regional areas which were among those hit hardest by the recent extreme weather.”
The one-off funding grants are available to eligible flood-affected clubs and organisations in local government areas across Queensland.
Other sporting clubs to receive funds in the first round are:
- Bundaberg Basketball Association
- North Bundaberg Cricket Club
- Tantitha Bowls Club (Bundaberg)
- Bundaberg Cricket Association
- Bundaberg Darts and Sports
- Bundaberg Hockey
- Bundaberg Netball
