Queensland Seniors will continue to be recognised and celebrated for their contribution to communities thanks to $375,000 from the Newman Government.
Member for Burnett, Stephen Bennett said the Council of the Aging (COTA) would receive the funding over three years to support community events during the popular annual Senior Week celebrations.
“Seniors Week encourages older people to get involved in local events and to increase their participation in the community,” Mr Bennett said.
“It’s also the perfect time for all Queenslanders to recognise and celebrate the immense contributions older people make to our communities.
“The contribution of Bundaberg and Burnett Senior Citizens at all levels of community to support, teach and share is incredibly rich.”
COTA Queensland Chief Executive Mark Tucker-Evans said the organisation was looking forward to bringing its ideas and experience to Seniors Week.
“We are delighted to partner with the Queensland Government on Seniors Week,” Mr Tucker-Evans said.
“Seniors Week is an opportunity to raise awareness of the issues that older people are facing and also to celebrate the diversity and strengths of Queensland seniors.
“We will use our networks across the state to partner with organisations and groups to engage seniors and other generations in events and activities across Queensland.”
Seniors Week 2013 will run from 17 to 25 August.
The funding will allow COTA Queensland to collaboratively plan, run and subsidise Seniors Week events and activities.
