Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett has revived the fight for a multimodal pathway to protect pedestrians and bike riders on Bargara Road.

Mr Bennett said it’s now more important than ever we see a dedicated pathway constructed with traffic movements increasing.

“It’s no secret more people are moving to our little slice of paradise,” he said.

“This means more cars, trucks, pedestrians, and bicycles.

“But this is not a new issue, for years local bike groups, community members, and I have been pushing for this pathway.

“Bargara Road has already claimed the lives of pedestrians and I’m not willing to stand by while the risk increases as the road gets busier.”

Mr Bennett tabled a Question on Notice for the Minister to Transport and Main Roads this morning.

Considering the additional $80.2 million in increased funding towards the Activate! Queensland program, bringing it to total of $394 million, can the Minister advise what is being done to secure a highly sought-after bike and pedestrian path between Bundaberg and Bargara?

“The Bundaberg and Burnett region is one of the best places to live, work and raise a family,” said Mr Bennett.

“But we’re missing the connectivity we so desperately need.

“That’s why I’m pushing to see some of the additional $80.2 million go towards a multimodal pathway between Bundaberg and Bargara.

“Talks on this pathway between TMR and the BRC began back in 2018 and I’m encouraging both levels of government to continue to work together to make this project a reality.

“I’m looking forward to future discussions and will continue to work with the community, government, and all stakeholders involved.”
