Bundaberg locals have been urged to come together over their wheelie bins once more, but this time to help vulnerable people escaping domestic and family violence.
Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett has joined forces with Hearts of Purple, a charity specializing in preventing technology facilitated abuse, and local business to roll out the Purple Bin Program across the Wide Bay.
Mr Bennett said he’s honoured to be able to assist with this program that has already seen a number of local businesses sign up.
“This program helps to raise much needed funds to keep the charity going,” he said.
“Hearts of Purple is run by a dedicated volunteer committee that works around the clock to help our most vulnerable people escape from domestic and family violence.
“A huge thanks must go to the wonderful local businesses Just Freight, Metalcorp Bundaberg, Bundaberg Lunchbox, LJ Hooker Bundaberg & Bargara Beach, Puddles Car & Dogwash and ABC Recycling who have already come on board with this program here in Bundaberg.
“They are leading the way to end domestic and family violence in our community.
“But today I’m calling on more local businesses to join the fight by taking on a purple bin.
“Home should be a place where we all feel safe, but for some it can be a dangerous place with no escape.
“While one voice might go unheard, together we can help free those harmed by domestic and family violence.”
Hearts of Purple CEO Michelle Beatie said the Purple Bin Program has successfully been rolled out from Northern NSW all the way up to Cairns, with Queensland Parliament also supporting the cause.
“Monies raised from the 10 cent recyclables, fund safety devices to protect our high-risk clients,” she said.
“We have a dedicated volunteer team and partnering businesses that keep the program running throughout the year.
“Our major partners, Express Recycling (Hervey Bay) and ABC Recycling (Bundaberg), have joined Hearts of Purple to continue this great work.”
