Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett has today reaffirmed his position to fight to protect primary producers and the firearm community’s rights against the continual attacks from Queensland Labor amid looming gun law changes.
Mr Bennett said he was committed to ensuring fairer gun laws that treated law-abiding firearm owners with respect.
“There have been many concerns raised by local licensed firearm owners and primary producers who feel betrayed by the Palaszczuk Government’s attempts to amend the National Firearm Agreement without consultation,” Mr Bennett said.
“The Palaszczuk Government’s proposed legislation to reclassify shotguns and the way they have gone about it significantly undermines the rights of law abiding firearm owners in our state.
“Unlike Labor, the LNP is actually consulting with the firearms community to ensure we get the balance right – and we are listening.”
Mr Bennett said he was committed to ensuring the state had a weapons licensing system that protected the community and respected the rights of law abiding firearm users who do the right thing and comply with the law of the day.
“We already have effective gun control laws in Queensland that protect people and ensures only the most responsible people can access those guns,” he said.
“Why is Annastacia Palaszczuk’s Labor Government now proposing to change this agreement and punish our law-abiding firearm owners who do the right thing and comply with the law?
“They should focus their attention on criminality and non-compliance.”
