Premier Campbell Newman will celebrate the spirit of the Bundaberg community and its people this Saturday (23 February) at a community barbecue at Alexandra Park.
Mr Newman said he was looking forward to catching up with local residents and emergency services workers at the event, and planned to review local recovery efforts in the city and outlying areas later in the day.
Local Member for Burnett, Stephen Bennett said that locals didn’t get the chance to celebrate Australia Day back in January.
“Many people’s homes, businesses and farms were devastated by the floods, so this event will be a chance for the Bundaberg community to get together and celebrate how far the region has come since the awful events of a few weeks ago.
“The Queensland spirit remains strong and the Newman Government is determined to rebuild and get people back in their homes and living normal lives as quickly as possible,” Mr Bennett said.
“So while this visit will give the Premier a chance to catch up with locals in a happier environment, he’ll also be looking at progress in fixing infrastructure and general recovery efforts throughout the region.”
The community barbecue will run from 11am to 4pm and ties in with statewide Australia Day II celebrations.
With a focus on family entertainment, the community day will include performances by a true icon of the Australian entertainment scene, Jade Hurley OAM, who will perform alongside children’s entertainer Bob the Builder and his team.
A range of local and national musicians and performers will also entertain throughout the day.
