A petition to upgrade the intersection of Davidson St and Bundaberg-Bargara Rd has been successful, Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett announced today.
Mr Bennett and concerned residents launched the petition in April this year to highlight safety concerns at the busy intersection following a number of accidents, including a major accident back in December last year.
The local MP tabled the petition with almost 900 signatures in Queensland Parliament just two weeks ago, requesting the urgent installation of turning signals for traffic turning from Davidson Street onto Bundaberg-Bargara Rd.
After being made aware of the petition, the Department of Main Roads prioritised upgrades at the intersection and works were completed yesterday.
Works included the installation of separate turning arrows in both directions to stop turning movement conflicting with motorists travelling straight ahead.
Mr Bennett congratulated the community for their efforts in highlighting the important issue and thanked the department of Main Roads for their swift action to ensure the safety of motorists using the intersection.
“I congratulate the Bargara community for banding together to raise concerns over this busy intersection… There is no doubt in my mind that these vital upgrades will save lives,” Mr Bennett said.
“The safety of motorists is paramount and I thank the department of Main Roads for taking these residents’ concerns seriously and for their quick action to make this intersection safer.
“Near misses and accidents are a common occurrence at this set of traffic lights due to poor visibility for traffic turning from Davidson Street onto Bargara Road. These upgrades will go a long way to addressing these concerns.”
Principal Petitioner Beth Scott said she was delighted with the outcome and that the intersection was now safer.
“I thank each and every person who signed the petition,” she said.
