A formal complaint has been made to the Board of Professional Engineers about the design of Paradise Dam by three local MP’s.
Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett, Member for Bundaberg David Batt and Member for Callide Colin Boyce have written to the professional body calling for an investigation into those behind the design and construction of the dam.
The letter addresses some serious concerns held by the MP’s and the community including why and how this roller compacted process was approved and signed off by qualified engineers.
The letter states:
The technical report conducted by GHD states core sampling of the dam in 2006 found there were bonding problems in 78 per cent of areas tested.
Queensland taxpayers paid hundreds of millions of dollars for a dam which has only lasted just over a decade. Simply put, taxpayers haven’t got what they paid for.
The LNP is requesting that the Board of Professional Engineers of Queensland (BPEQ) consider investigating individuals for potential breaches of the Professionals Engineering Act as a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ).
The LNP is also requesting that if these investigations reveal any improprieties that BPEQ then prosecute these individuals under the powers of the Act.
Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said residents of the Wide Bay Burnett and all Queenslanders deserve answers on what has happened at Paradise Dam.
“The impacts of this dam disaster are huge and our region is facing a very uncertain future,” he said.
“Bundaberg and Burnett residents don’t deserve to be treated like this.
“A failure of this epic scale needs to be dealt with and we believe BPEQ has a role in delivering justice to affected communities.”
Member for Bundaberg David Batt said local residents are gravely concerned about the impact the dam debacle will have on the region long term.
“Our community deserves to know exactly what led to the failings of Paradise Dam,” he said.
“The State Government’s inquiry won’t answer all the questions, which is why we are calling on the BPEQ to investigate the design and construction of the dam.
“I’ll continue to fight for more information until the Bundaberg region has all the answers it deserves.”
