Member for Burnett and Shadow Minister for Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Stephen Bennett has slammed Gladstone MP Glenn Butcher after he stood up for Labor’s Domestic Violence Policy that gave public servants who abuse their partners paid leave.

Mr Bennett said they saw a deeply divided, dysfunctional Labor Government looking for policy relevance in parliament last week.

Leader of the Opposition Deb Frecklington MP, moved a private members motion to call on the Palaszczuk Government to scrap its policy which gave 10 extra work days of taxpayer funded leave per year to perpetrators of Domestic and Family Violence.

Premier Anastacia Palaszczuk finally backflipped on Labor’s policy and adopted the LNP’s position on Thursday night said Mr Bennett.

“Gladstone MP Glenn Butcher and a number of the extreme left of the Queensland Labor Party stood in Parliament one by one to oppose the LNP motion to overturn the policy,” said Mr Bennett.

“They elected to vigorously defend giving thugs and cowards who commit heinous violent crimes on their wives, partners and children, extra taxpayer funded leave.

“This ideology is offensive to the victims, it is offensive to the most vulnerable in our community, and it is offensive to those fleeing domestic violence.

“It’s also offensive to Queensland taxpayers who see all too often their taxes being wasted by out-of-touch Labor Governments.

“I was proud to stand and speak in Parliament with my LNP colleagues in support of the Leader of the Opposition’s motion.

“We understand that we all must do everything we can to get rid of the scourge of domestic and family violence and I will continue to stand up to fight on behalf of those who deserve so much more.”
