Hundreds of students will swap the classroom for a tractor next week at the second biennial Paddock to Plate Expo in Childers.
The event is aimed at bridging the increasing gap between the rural and urban divide.
Organiser and St Joseph’s School Childers Teacher Stephanie Milowski said they hope to provide students and the community with an opportunity to understand where their food and fibre comes from.
“There’ll be tractors, graders, farm displays, fresh produce you name it!” she said.
“The aim of the day is to get students excited about our delicious produce to help them learn and appreciate where their breakfast, lunch and dinner comes from.
“What better way to explore these themes than from our local industry experts who provide pantry staples for households across the world.
“Students can ask questions and gain a great insight into their daily processes and procedures.
“The expo is about creating a connection between the generations to help our students gain a better understanding of our food’s origin, healthy lifestyles, and of course our natural world.”
Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett has encouraged local businesses and schools to get involved.
“Our region is often referred to as Australia’s tastiest food bowl so it’s important we celebrate this prestigious title!” said Mr Bennett.
“With rising food costs, the impact of the global pandemic, and various other concerns competing for our attention, it’s no surprise we’re becoming increasingly out of touch with where our food comes from.
“The Paddock to Plate Expo aims to create this awareness from a young age and I’m thrilled to be able to support and promote it.”
The Second Paddock to Plate Expo will be hosted by St Joseph’s School Childers on Friday the 26th of July 2024 during Catholic Education Week and is open to all schools in the Wide Bay.
