The world will be ‘blown away’ when they see our pristine kitesurfing location right here in Elliott Heads, said the Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett.

“We have the best conditions, the best terrain and the best position for the sport and it’s time we share it with the rest of the world!” he said.

Mr Bennett has joined forces with Wind Slasher legend Peter Higgins to ‘power up’ a bid to host the Olympic sport of kitesurfing at Elliott Heads.

“In terms of coastal topography, you couldn’t pick a more perfect spot to host a kitesurfing event, we have the rare good fortune of both ocean and river conditions all in the one place,” said Mr Bennett.

“There’s a huge amount of kite surfing real-estate, plenty of spectator positions and ideal weather patterns, so choosing an Olympic kitesurfing location should really be a no brainer!

“But don’t just take my word for it! Our annual Wind Slasher event attracts competitors from across the country and globe and they all say one thing; it’s simply the best when it comes to kitesurfing.

“Bringing an Olympic sport to our region would be a tremendous boost for the Wide Bay, economically, socially and culturally, so I’m calling on the decision makers to look no further than Elliott Heads!

Mr Bennett has written to the Minister for Sport and Recreation, the Queensland Olympic Council and the Bundaberg Regional Council this morning to present the Olympic bid.

Wind Slasher Event Organiser Peter Higgins said it’s the right time to expand kiting at the Olympics following the inclusion of Kite Foil racing at this year’s games and the movement towards more extreme and modern sports.

“It’s perfect timing to start our conversations about the inclusion of Free Style Kite Boarding and Big Air in the 2032 Brisbane Olympics either as a fully-fledged or demonstration sport,” he said.

“We are truly blessed by having one of Australia’s premier locations for kiting with Elliott Heads fast becoming a bucket list location for kiters around the globe.

“We have tremendous support locally from Stephen Bennett, the team at Driftwood Café, Undertow Kite and Surf, Elliott Heads Kite Boarding Club, Apex Bundaberg, and the Bundaberg Regional Council already for our events.

“We’re now calling on the rest of our community and local businesses to get behind our Olympic bid and voice their support by contacting Mr Bennett’s office or the team at Driftwood Café!”
