Queensland will soon have a new building regulator after Parliament last week voted to allow the creation of the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) to replace the controversial Queensland Building Services Authority (BSA).
Member for Burnett, Stephen Bennett said that the long overdue changes are the biggest shake-up to the way the industry is regulated in over 20 years.
“The building and construction industry is one of the pillars of the Queensland economy and with the passage of this legislation, Queensland will soon have the best building regulator in the country,” Mr Bennett said.
The creation of the QBCC is the first step in the Newman Government’s 10 Point Plan to reform the BSA.
Other key initiatives include reviewing the licensing and compliance arrangements for contractors and reforms to allow rapid dispute adjudication and reduce the number of cases being referred to QCAT will be implemented progressively by the new board.
Housing Minister Tim Mander said the initiatives outlined in the action plan would be implemented progressively by the Commission, which is expected to be operational by the end of the year.
