The Member for Burnett, Stephen Bennett has today welcomed the appointees of the new Horticulture Industry Development Group (Horticulture IDG) in its first quarterly meeting.
“This important group will work with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) to progress issues relating to the future prosperity of the Queensland horticulture sector,” he said.
“The Newman Government is committed to the goal of doubling food production in Queensland by 2040.
“By bringing together industry teams such as the Horticulture IDG we are laying the groundwork for a more productive future in Queensland.
“The Horticulture IDG will also oversee the delivery of the $500,000 Horticulture Workforce Plan election commitment.
“The membership includes industry leaders and successful horticulture business people who understand the issues and challenges for this sector.
“This will ensure a strong business approach to growing the horticulture industry.
“The Horticulture IDG will be led by Mr Selwyn Snell, a highly respected member of the industry.
“As an independent chair, Mr Snell will be responsible for facilitating actions and activities that meet key industry needs.”
Mr Bennett said the members are appointed for a two year term and would include:
- Independent Chair – Mr Selwyn Snell
- Industry members – Mr John Bunker, Mr Geoff Chivers (Chairman of the Bundaberg Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association), Mr David De Paoli (from Austchilli, Bundaberg), Mr Ian Groves, Mr Matthew Hood, Mr Jamie Jurgens, Mr Alex Livingstone, Mr Doug Phillips, Ms Marie Piccone, Mr Ray Hook, Mr Gavin Scurr, Ms Ros Smerdon, Mr Andrew Young and Mr Carl Walker.
- Ex Officio Members – Mr John Chapman and Mr Bob Durance
Specifically the committee will identify obstacles such as red tape, opportunities for industry growth, help develop and implement programs and policies to grow the industry and guide research and development investment.
