Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett has encouraged Bundaberg property owners who have had a hot water system installed in the past five years to contact the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) to make sure their water system is safe.

Mr Bennett, the Shadow Minister for Housing and Public Works, said Bundaberg residents who have had a hot water system replaced could be at risk of drinking contaminated water if they used a particular plumbing contractor.

It follows an urgent warning released by the QBCC after an investigation found a product used by a contractor could put a household’s water supply at risk.

The investigation found of the 28 properties across the Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay where the contractor worked, there were eight cases where he had used the lead solder, and put the water supply at risk.

Mr Bennett said the properties may not necessarily be limited to homes or units and may include commercial and industrial premises.
People requiring health information on lead should contact their GP or call 13HEALTH.

“If anyone has any concerns at all, I urge them to make contact with the QBCC on 139 333 who can confirm whether the work was carried out by this particular contractor and arrange a free inspection,” Mr Bennett said.
