Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett is encouraging Bundaberg and Burnett residents to honour firefighters this Sunday, February 28, as part of National Red Balloon Day.
Mr Bennett said the event, in its third year, was designed to acknowledge and thank urban, auxiliary and rural firefighters who work hard to protect others.
“I encourage Bundaberg and Burnett residents to fly a red balloon from their letterbox, fence, business window or display a red ribbon from their car next Sunday to let our heroic firefighters know just how much we appreciate their dedication and hard work,” Mr Bennett said.
“Our devoted firefighters are a rare and genuine breed of selfless individuals who put their lives on the line every day to help others.
“Showing our support by buying a red balloon is a simple way of demonstrating to our firies that we don’t take them for granted and that we do acknowledge the sacrifices they make to ensure we are all safe.
“I invite people to drop into my office and pick up a balloon or two to display next Sunday,” he said.
Bargara restaurant, Casablanca on Sea, has thrown its support behind National Red Balloon Day and urged other local businesses to join in.
“It’s a great way for businesses and families to show their appreciation for all the hard work that firies do for our community,” Casablanca on See owner Natasha Sfettina said.
Official thank you red balloons are also available for sale at www.nationalredballoonday.org.
All proceeds from the sale of official ‘Thank you Fireys’ balloons will go back to assisting Queensland fire services.
