Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett has wasted no time in his new role as the Shadow Minister for Child Safety to reiterate his commitment to tackling the growing ice epidemic.
Mr Bennett said a third of children were put into care by the Department of Child Safety in the past year due to their parents admitting to using crystal methamphetamine (ice).
“It’s a disturbing trend and it’s one of the reasons I have been focused on addressing some of the precursors to domestic and family violence such as drug and alcohol abuse,” he said.
“Our region is not immune to the use of illicit drugs and that’s why I have been pushing for a dedicated rehabilitation facility in the region.”
Mr Bennett called on the Palaszczuk Government to adopt the LNP’s plan to establish a dedicated multi-bed drug and alcohol treatment centre in the Wide Bay.
“The LNP has a comprehensive ice strategy ready to go, including a drug rehabilitation facility for the region. The homework has been done for the government. All this government has to do is adopt our ice strategy and put it into action before it’s too late.
“The ice epidemic is out of control across the state and Labor doesn’t seem to have a plan to tackle the issue.”
