New flashing school zone lights are now installed at Isis District State High School on North Street in Childers as part of the Newman Government’s election commitment.
The flashing lights assist to warn motorists to slow down in school zones.
We believe these signs are going to go a long way in reminding drivers they are approaching school zones and need to slow down immediately.
The Newman Government has committed $10 million over four years to install flashing light signs at over 300 school zones. Three schools in the Burnett electorate will have flashing lights installed, with two already complete.
Flashing lights are one of the most effective tools we have to slow down motorists near schools – I’m delighted we’ve already been able to extend this successful program to the South Kolan State School.
The safety of all road users is our top priority, and that is certainly the case for our littlest Queenslanders.
In 2012, there were 24,836 fines issued in school zones – an increase of 44 per cent from 2011. Of the fines issued, between January and December 2012, a concerning 316 were motorists travelling at more than 30km/h above the speed limit, with 36 drivers travelling more than 40km/h above the speed limit.
