Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett has tabled a petition in Parliament to see the decision to close the Obstetrics Practice at the Gladstone Mater Hospital reviewed.
“Over 400 people in Gladstone have signed a petition to see the decision revitalised by an independent entity,” Mr Bennett said.
“They’ve come to me in desperation, sensing a lack of representation by their local member.
“It’s vital those voices in the northern part of my electorate are heard as they’re claiming an absence of effective operational co-operation between the Gladstone Hospital and the Mater hospital.
“They’re now facing long term negative impacts due to the closure, something many believe could have been avoided.
“A highly respected obstetrician tried extremely hard to get admitting rights to get patients to the Gladstone Public Hospital, but he was turned away.
“As a result, he was left with no choice but to leave the region completely.
“We’re asking the Health Minister to initiate a meeting between local government stakeholders, industry partners, community representatives, the hospital board, and both hospital management teams.
“The people of Gladstone are crying out for help, asking for the goals of the co-location agreement be reviewed by an independent entity.”
