Roadside_Rubbish_Blitz1Community groups, individuals and businesses are being urged to join Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett in a ‘Roadside Rubbish Blitz’ to tackle the escalating roadside litter problem in the region.

Mr Bennett has organised the clean up to coincide with ‘Keep Australia Beautiful Week’, in response to complaints received from residents about the increasing amount of rubbish on the side of the Isis Highway leading into Bundaberg.

“People are quite concerned that visitors to our region are getting a poor first impression of our community as they drive past the litter into town,” Mr Bennett said.

Mr Bennett said litter was an ongoing problem faced by every community, and getting local residents involved in adopting sites has many benefits for the Bundaberg and Burnett region.

“We all have a responsibility to help keep our town tidy, so I’m urging people to join me and roll up their sleeves and help clean up the roadside litter this weekend,” he said.

“It would be great to see many people get involved in cleaning up the gateway to our region to support our community’s efforts to create a clean environment for locals and visitors to enjoy.

“Tackling the littering issue is important for environmental health as well as community safety and our community’s reputation.”

Mr Bennett is encouraging locals to gather their family and friends, don some gloves and head out to Bundaberg’s welcome sign near Bonna Road on Saturday, August 29, where the clean-up will commence at 7.30am to 8.30am.

Participants will be provided with the tools to clean up the nominated site, including gloves, litter bags and tongs.
