Garden parties just got a whole lot better for the Agnes Water Orchid and Foliage Club following the donation of a barbecue from State Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett.
Mr Bennett hand delivered the brand new barbecue to the club this week, which he personally donated to support the non-profit club. Mr Bennett said after hearing the plight of the non-profit community group and their need for more resources, he couldn’t resist helping out to ensure the club not only survived but thrived.
“I was really impressed when I heard about Debra’s initiative in forming a group for the benefit of the community in encouraging people to get out and about and enjoy the great outdoors, and I congratulate her on getting the group off the ground,” he said.
“Gardening is a very healthy hobby on many levels and has been lauded for its therapeutic values both mentally and physically.
“It’s great to see regional and remote communities such as Agnes Water having their very own gardening club.”
Mr Bennett said he hoped the barbecue helped the club host many memorable social events, and he looked forward to attending the Orchid and Foliage Show next year. Club president Debra Richards thanked Mr Bennett for the donation.
“We are so grateful to Stephen Bennett and thank him for his personal donation of the barbecue,” she said.
“The barbecue was on our wishlist – now we will be able to hold many barbecues to socialise and enjoy a great aussie past time.
Mrs Richards said she started the garden club three years ago to get people out of their homes and enjoying the sunshine and fresh air. “I wanted to give back to the community,” she said.
“The club gives people something to do out to the garden, allows them to learn a few things, mingle and meet new people.
“We have social days, morning teas every now and then and working bees in the community to help people who are doing it tough by clearing up their gardens.”
She said anyone is welcome to join the club.
