What do former Olympians, triathletes, surf life savers, crossfitters and politicians have in common? A desire to help protect our Great Barrier Reef!
Burnett Loggerheads, a team consisting of local athletes, fitness fanatics and everyday mums and dads, will take to the water next weekend to raise awareness and funds towards the protection of the Great Barrier Reef.
The team, sponsored by Shadow Environment Minister and Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett, will have from midday to midnight on Saturday, January 23, to swim as many laps as possible at the Anzac Pool in support of the ‘Swim for the Reef’ campaign.
Bundaberg’s Frances Adcock, who is an Olympian (Athens Olympics) and three-time Australian champion in the 200m backstroke, was one of the first to dive in and support the cause.
“We have the Great Barrier Reef at our doorstep, home to many endangered and vulnerable creatures. We need to raise awareness of the reef as a community, and nurture its future,” Miss Adcock said.
Mr Bennett encouraged the community to get behind the local team.
“It’s great to see so many locals swimming identities throwing their support behind the Swim for the Reef event and being passionate about the health and future of our reef,” he said.
“The Great Barrier Reef is such an important part of Queensland’s extraordinary natural heritage and this natural wonder needs our protection.
Mr Bennett said all funds raised by the Burnett Loggerheads will go towards research, a public awareness campaign and other important initiatives in support of the reef.
“This campaign is about spreading the word about our reef and its assets to ensure the reef remains alive and well for future generations to enjoy,” he said.
