An LNP Government will scrap Labor’s heartless and greedy Grey Nomad Tax, Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett announced.
Speaking at Searle’s RV Centre today, Mr Bennett said ditching Annastacia Palaszczuk’s tax on campervans will save motorhome consumers thousands of dollars and encourage more drive tourism to the region.
“When the Palaszczuk Labor Government introduced this greedy tax grab it had a devastating impact on local motorhome businesses like Searle’s RV Centre, as well as the region’s drive tourism industry and grey nomads,” he said.
“The Labor Government’s absurd vehicle tax added thousands of dollars to the cost of a caravan or motorhome, making them far less affordable to most people, particularly retirees who make up the majority of the motorhome market.
“Scrapping the greedy grey nomad tax will really help regional areas like Bundaberg and Burnett which relies on grey nomads for a much-needed economic boost.”
Mr Bennett said the tax would be axed in the LNP’s first Budget.
“Queenslanders who have worked hard for their whole lives should not be slugged with extra unfair taxes by Labor,” he said.
“We want seniors to buy more Queensland-made campervans and explore our great state.
“This plan means more jobs for local campervan manufacturers and more money for businesses that depend on regional tourism.”
Labor’s Grey Nomad Tax increased the transfer duty on new and second-hand campervans above $100,000.
With the average cost of a new motorhome or campervan being $140,000, the LNP’s policy will save buyers of new vehicles an average of $2800 in tax per sale.
The saving on a second-hand motorhome sold for $110,000 would be $2,200.
Ben Searle, of Searle’s RV Centre, welcomed the LNP’s policy.
“The intention of Labor’s tax grab was for luxury cars. An entry level motorhome, new or used, became the victim of greed,” Mr Searle said.
“It’s fantastic that the LNP have taken the time to investigate this unreasonable tax and exclude those hard working retirees from the stamp duty mess,” he said.
