Local Member Stephen Bennett said all state primary schools in Burnett would share in the Newman Government’s $26 million Getting the Basics Right – Literacy and Numeracy grants over the next four years.
Mr Bennett said it was a major funding boost for literacy and numeracy programs that would help set Burnett children on the right track for future learning success.
“The Newman Government is committed to making Queensland one of Australia’s leading states in literacy and numeracy,” Mr Bennett said.
“We can do this by getting the basics right in the early years – from Prep to Year 2.
“Schools will use this funding to tailor programs to the specific needs of their students and school communities.”
Mr Bennett said the first round of grants would be delivered to schools before the end of the school year.
“The amount of funding that each school will receive is based on needs, rather than enrolment figures,” he said.
“This will enable schools to deliver real and improved outcomes in literacy and numeracy for all of their students.
“Schools will decide how to use their grants to best meet the needs of their students and of course this will involve consultation with parents.
“Students in Prep to Year 2 will begin to reap the benefits of their school-based literacy and numeracy programs from the start of next year.”
