Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett has urged landowners to avoid the use of ‘Queensland Globe’ to determine boundary markers.
It follows serious community concerns regarding land clearing in Baffle Creek.
Mr Bennett said he’s reminding property owners that the popular interactive mapping and data website should only be used as a tool.
“It’s vital that landholders engage professional surveyors to determine precise boundary markers,” he said.
“Queensland Globe is not meant to be used for determining property boundaries, but only for ‘indicative’ purposes.
“I’ve spoken to both the Environment Department and Ergon Energy who confirm that the use of the mapping site for the purposes of precise measurement is certainly not advised.
“It should be noted that within Queensland Globe, it’s not possible to preserve the shape, area, distance, and direction of features on the earth over a large area when looking at a flat representation of the earth. *
“Therefore, there is no perfect map projection.
“It’s important that all landholders take steps to ensure they’re making changes to their own land and properly categorised land, as failure to do so could inevitably cause serious problems.”
The Burnett MP said property owners can also seek clarification from the Department of Environment.
“The Department can prepare a landholder map on request that can be uploaded on a Geo Reference APP and taken offline where there is no internet connection,” said Mr Bennett.
“This is a much more precise map of boundaries and contains inbuilt geo-references.
“Landholders just need to call the Department’s Vegetation Management Hub on 135 834 to request a map that will provide a very close indicator of their boundaries.”
