The Palaszczuk-Miles Government has hit the brakes when it comes to important safety and connectivity upgrades across the Bundaberg and Burnett road network.
Shadow Minister for Transport and Main Roads Steve Minnikin has joined LNP Candidate for Bundaberg Bree Watson and Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett in Bundaberg today to drive a campaign for vital upgrades on state-controlled roads in the region.
Mr Minnikin has been traveling the length of the Bruce Highway through Regional Queensland and said it’s clear Transport Minister Bart Mellish has been asleep at the wheel.
“You can’t get a handle of the issues on the state-controlled roads across Regional Queensland, unless you get your hands on the wheel and drive them,” Mr Minnikin said.
“Communities are desperate for action and real change, but it’s disappointing Transport Minister Bart Mellish won’t listen or see the issues for himself.
“Regional Queensland deserves better and only the LNP has the right plan for Queensland’s future.”
LNP Candidate for Bundaberg Bree Watson said the community’s plea for urgent works at the Goodwood Road and McCarthy Road intersection has been ignored for half a decade.
“The LNP recognised the intersection of Goodwood and McCarthy as a location that required upgrading years ago,” said Ms Watson.
“Labor hasn’t done anything with this, and it remains an area of high traffic.
“With two primary schools in close proximity and an aged care residence it’s important this area is revisited to protect the safety of all road users.”
Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said years of neglect under the State Labor Government meant there was a long list of vital road upgrades across the region.
“This intersection is one of many needing urgent works,” said Mr Bennett.
“The Bargara-Hughes Road Intersection in the Burnett Electorate is another serious concern with near misses or crashes witnessed regularly.
“Traffic movements are increasing at a rapid rate but this State Government has refused to listen to our urgent calls for action.
“After more than a decade under Labor, we have to ask are we better or worse off?
“It’s clear our roads have certainly copped the brunt of Labor’s failure to plan.”
