Christmas has come early for sports clubs in the Isis District, after two local clubs cleaned up in the Queensland Government’s Get Playing Places and Spaces Program this month.
The Isis Tennis Club and the Childers Rifle and Pistol Club will share in almost $150,000 in funding from Round 5 of the Program to upgrade facilities, Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett has announced.
Mr Bennett said more than $75,300 has been approved for the Isis Tennis Club to upgrade and construct new tennis courts in Childers, while the Childers Rifle and Pistol Club will receive just under $73,000 to construct safety barrier walls at their grounds.
“This is wonderful news for our local sporting clubs,” he said.
“These great new facilities will improve training opportunities for club members and encourage new participants to sign up and get involved in their chosen sport, whether that be tennis or shooting.
“Improving local facilities is crucial to encouraging more locals to get involved in sport and recreation.”
Isis Tennis Club president Greg Royan welcomed the funding announcement.
“It going to mean a lot, especially for the juniors… having different courts for them to play on,” he said.
“It will help our older members as well, especially with the synthetic grass.” he said.
Mr Royan said the upgrades would hopefully increase membership.
“Hopefully people will see that we’ve got new courts and we will get a few more people there.”
Childers Rifle and Pistol Club spokesperson Larry Dunks said the new safety barrier walls would allow the club to maximise use of the facilities.
Mr Dunks said once the safety barriers were installed, the two ten bay ranges could operate at the same time.
The upgrades would also mean the club could host more Open Days.
Mr Bennett congratulated both clubs on their funding and said he looked forward to visiting once the upgrades were completed.
