Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett is encouraging local landholders to participate in a Parliamentary Inquiry into the impacts of weeds and their control on Queensland’s $12 billion agriculture sector.
Mr Bennett said the Agriculture and Environment Committee would investigate the impacts of invasive plants and their control in the state, particularly related to the role and responsibilities of various government departments.
“The Inquiry will look at how various agencies work together to coordinate programs to effectively control invasive plants, the funding and various weed control programs and new technologies available,” Mr Bennett said.
“I have been calling for action on the impact of weeds on our local community for a number of years now, and we must take the opportunity to influence government and set policies that are reflective of the region’s needs.
“The impact of invasive weeds on our agricultural sector cannot be underrated. In fact, it is estimated to cost our economy around $4 billion a year.
“The committee will focus on examining the impact of three invasive plant species, including the prickly acacia, Giant Rat’s Tail Grass and Fireweed.”
Written submissions can be posted to Research Director, Agriculture and Environment Committee, Parliament House, Q 4000, or emailed to aec.parliament.qld.gov.au
Residents have until Monday, 16 January 2017, to lodge submissions to the Committee.
