Hands off our gas pipeline! That is the message Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett is sending to the new Labor Government.
Mr Bennett has launched an online campaign today and urged the Bundaberg and Burnett community to get behind him to save the former state government’s approved and funded gas pipeline infrastructure project.
The campaign follows news government ministers will make a decision on the project this week.
Mr Bennett said the gas pipeline investment was critical to the future of Bundaberg and the surrounding district and would play a major role in boosting the local economy and creating jobs.
“The project is imperative for the economic growth in our region which is in desperate need of new gas infrastructure,” he said.
“The investment of the 24.7 km pipeline will attract many new industries to the region and create many more permanent strong and stable job opportunities, and help existing businesses to expand.
“Already we have seen a world leading plasterboard manufacturing company, Knauf, announce its intention to construct a $70 million factory at the Port – a decision which was made based primarily on the fact the gas pipeline was to be installed.
“But all of this is now under threat. I fear the new Labor Government may choose to play politics and cut funding like they have already done to other projects in the region.”
