Burnett MP Stephen Bennett has called on the state government to offer half price rail travel to entice tourists to the Wide Bay Burnett and beyond, to aid the region’s economic recovery.
Mr Bennett, who has been a long-term local tourism champion, made the call following the government’s announcement offering travel vouchers for Queenslanders to spend on tourist activities in Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef.
“As we recover from the tourism slump and restrictions ease, it’s important that all tourism operators and small businesses throughout the state are given a helping hand,” Mr Bennett said.
“People are starting to plan their long-awaited holidays, and I see half-price rail fares as the perfect opportunity to really open up our region and the greater Wide Bay to the rest of the state.
“People may not have the capacity to head right up north for a holiday, so the Wide Bay Burnett offers an ideal, desirable destination given we have so much to offer and are only a few short hours north of Brisbane.
“With the pristine reef at our doorstep, turtle encounters and world-famous food and drink experiences, what’s not to love about our beautiful backyard?”
