An unlikely teacher’s aid is helping Bargara State School students improve their literacy.

‘Tay’ the English Springer Spaniel is a ‘Story Dog’, part of a voluntary organisation that provides canines for students struggling with their reading skills.

Tay’s owner Caroline Oates said the dogs listen to the children without judgment as they sound out words.

“When children read to a dog, the outcomes are amazing!” Mrs Oates said.

“It is a non-judgmental setting, the children’s focus improves, their literacy skills increase and their confidence soars.

“The accepting, loving nature of dogs gives this program its magic and helps children relax, open up, try harder and have fun while reading to a friendly, calm dog.”

Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said becoming Tay’s sponsor was a no brainer.

“It’s important that no child is left behind in literacy, that’s why I jumped at the chance to become a Story Dogs Sponsor,” Mr Bennett said.

“Literacy is crucial to every child’s future, what better way to break down the barriers and build confidence than through the comfort of a non-judgmental dog.

“Our teachers do an incredible job educating the next generation of doctors, farmers, carpenters, journalists, and entrepreneurs.

“But sometimes it’s hard to ensure that every child gets the help they need to reach that next milestone, that’s where Story Dogs come in.

“I’d encourage anyone who is thinking of becoming a sponsor to reach out to Story Dogs and visit their website to learn more.”

Mrs Oates said she and Tay are on the look out for more furry friends to don the harness and become a literacy hero.

“I would like to think this program would be welcomed into every primary school in the Bundaberg Region, so more volunteers and their dogs that meet the criteria are certainly needed,” she said.

“The dog needs to be obedient and unflappable.

“While the volunteer needs to make a commitment to a school to attend for a period of time each week of term for a minimum of one year.”
