The historic vehicle that transported Bert Hinkler through the streets of Brisbane during his celebrated civic reception in 1928 will be restored following a state government grant.

Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said the Hinkler House Memorial Museum and Research Association had been awarded $35,000 through the state government’s Gambling Community Benefit Fund to complete the restoration project.

“An incredible 36 hundred man hours have gone into restoring the Bundaberg pioneering aviator’s 1926 Armstrong Siddeley. This funding is the icing on the cake to ensure this great iconic piece of Bundaberg’s history is preserved,” Mr Bennett said.

“Bert Hinkler is a local hero and it’s fitting that his vehicle which is closely associated to his world-renowned flight from England to Australia is being preserved and will be on display right here in Bundaberg.”

Mr Bennett said the Hinkler House Memorial Museum and Research Association was one of nine community groups in the Burnett region to be awarded funds through the state government grant.

“Organisations like the Hinkler House Memorial Museum and Research Association are the backbone to our community and it’s wonderful to see these groups receive the recognition they deserve to help them deliver important local projects and services,” he said.

Mr Bennett said more than $155,000 has been divvied up to Burnett community groups through the latest round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund.

The grants program provides one-off funding to not-for-profit community organisations with revenues sourced from gaming taxes.
