The Moore Park Surf Life Saving Club is making waves thanks to a $35,000 Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) grant.
It comes as welcome news for members with the clubhouse in desperate need of some TLC.
In 2010 the surf club was ravaged by cyclones?and high tides resulting in significant damage.
Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said the funding couldn’t come soon enough.
“With a new clubhouse on the cards but construction costs and expenses ever increasing, this grant is hugely appreciated,” said Mr Bennett.
“The community deserves a club they can be proud of and this funding will help deliver that.
“The club and its members have been working on funding a new clubhouse for over a decade, so I’m thrilled to see the GCBF grant go to such a worthy cause.
“We are a water loving community and our?Surf Life Savers play an integral role in keeping our beachgoers safe.”
Moore Park Surf Life Saving Club President Leigh Schuch said members must currently use the existing facility that is assessed by a structural engineer every six months.
“It’s needless to say we are excited. These funds will go towards the fit out of a new canteen that will be constructed in one section of the existing gear shed,” she said.
“The Club is in its final stages of preparing the documentation to go out to tender for the construction of the new clubhouse. Once a builder is appointed following the tender stage, it’s anticipated that construction will commence as soon as possible thereafter.”
Ms Schuch said the start of the summer season has been challenging but rewarding.
“There has been good visitation numbers to the beach over the summer season especially with the hot humid weather we have been experiencing,” she said.
“There has also been a lot of sand movement on the beach with large drop offs which has made it a little challenging for some people to get to the water.”
