Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett has slammed the State Labor Government for their failed approach to flood mitigation in the Bundaberg region.

More than 5000 people have put pen to paper to call for a review of some of the originally proposed flood mitigation options.

Mr Bennett tabled the petition in Queensland Parliament last night before taking to the floor to voice the communities’ concerns.

“Flood proofing Bundaberg is vital, but it’s important we get it right,” he said.

“Unfortunately, residents are extremely disappointment over the consultation process and the constant delays from this State Labor Government.

“Thousands of people are calling for a review of the flood mitigation options, with more than half allegedly claiming to know very little or nothing about the proposed East Flood levy wall’s location or effects.”

The Burnett MP said while Bundaberg East Flood Levee would provide good mitigation options for those living in Central and East Bundaberg, there are numerous other options that shouldn’t be ruled out entirely.

“The Bundaberg Flood Protection Group has been advocating for flood mitigation on a staged basis,” said Mr Bennett.

“One option gaining traction is to restore the river as close as possible back to its original state, at an affordable cost.

“The 2014 GHD report explains though widening only the Millaquin Bend it would reduce flood heights in both the south and north sides of the river, avoiding above floor flooding in 436 properties. *

“It also costs almost half that of the levee.

“I’m not the expert and I’ve never claimed to be, but I do know it would be completely irresponsible to rule out other viable options without proper consultation and investigation.

“From day one I have been fighting for flood mitigation in the Bundaberg region, but sadly it appears we are not a priority for this State Labor Government.

“The Palaszczuk Government just can’t deliver anything significant outside the SEQ.

“Flood proofing Bundaberg is a serious issue that if handled correctly could save many lives and properties.

“We need the best solution that is properly researched, investigated and discussed.

“The Palaszczuk Government’s Band-Aid approach to Regional Queensland has got to stop.

“It’s time to stop playing politics, stop wasting taxpayers’ money and stop the coverups.

“Bundaberg deserves better.”
