Member for Burnett, Stephen Bennett, is encouraging anyone who has a strong interest in protecting the state’s heritage to nominate for the Queensland Heritage Council.

“The Queensland Heritage Council is the state’s peak body on heritage matters and is responsible for identifying and protecting buildings and places that have a special cultural value to the community,” Mr Bennett said.

“Applicants with a high level of knowledge and interest in heritage conservation are encouraged to apply for six available positions.”

Mr Bennett said it was a unique opportunity for the new members to have a say in how the growth and development of Queensland was managed, while ensuring the state’s valuable heritage sites were protected.

“The Queensland Heritage Council is a statutory body which provides advice to the Queensland Government on strategic and high priority matters relating to the state’s heritage.

“The Council acts independently, impartially and in the public interest to determine which places are entered in or removed from the Queensland Heritage Register.

“I am hopeful the new appointments will renew and refresh the Council, established under the Queensland Heritage Act 1992 which came into effect 20 years ago this month.

“Heritage sites contribute to our sense of place, reinforce our identity and help define what it means to be a Queenslander so it is extremely important to protect them for future generations.”

Examples of the types of skills sought include archaeology, architecture, economics, engineering, planning, history, law, local government and property management.

For more information on the positions please phone 3330 5858 or email [email protected] for an information pack.

Applications will close on 7 September 2012.
