The Isis District Historical Society is gearing up for a big weekend as part of the Australian Heritage Festival.
Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said the festival runs throughout May with several National Trusts and organisations across the region holding events.
The Childers Heritage Weekend will play host to a range of activities and attractions from museum visits to demonstrations of traditional crafting.
Mr Bennett said the community can also take a stroll down memory lane at the Childers Historical Complex on May 14.
“The Historical Society is excited to welcome everyone through their gates with some new gadgets and gizmos to show off,” he said.
“They’ve recently received an almost $35,000 Gambling Community Benefit Fund Grant to go towards a range of equipment, displays and maintenance.
“You couldn’t meet a more passionate bunch of people; I was extremely pleased to see the GCBF money go towards such a creative and enthusiastic group.
“Their energy is infectious, that’s why I’d also like to take the opportunity to encourage the community to talk to the members about volunteering.
“It’s such a rewarding and worthwhile organisation and I know they’d love to welcome new faces.”
Isis District Historical Society’s Helen Townsend said new technology will help to more accurately display the past.
“We are about to refurbish one of our rooms in the Old Isis Mill School,” she said.
“When completed, our ‘Sugar Room’ will hold and display many records and artefacts from our local sugar industry dating back more than 100 years.
“Story boards are also being installed which will help give visitors insight to the daily lives of our forebears.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming the community through our gates during the Childers Heritage Weekend!”
