Three previously unnamed Elliott River landmarks have been given official titles after a proposal received local community support.
Member for Burnett, Stephen Bennett, said the Joseph Coonan Lookout, Fallons Rocks and Sharks Nest would all be added to the State’s official place names database.
“The formal naming of the Joseph Coonan Lookout honours the man of the same name,” Mr Bennett said.
“Mr Coonan died in 1989 after building one of the first fishing huts on the banks of the Elliott River near Fallons Rocks during the 1920s, and fished and crabbed in the area for more than 60 years.
“While conducting research into the proposal to officially name the lookout, officers from the Department of Natural Resources and Mines discovered that two other local landmarks were not officially named on the department’s records.
“Fallons Rocks is extremely well-known among the local fishing community, but was referred to in the department’s historical database simply as ‘The Rocks’.
“Another well-known geographical feature just downstream is colloquially known as the Sharks Nest but had no formal recognition in the department’s records.
“The naming proposals were supported by a number of individuals and organisations including the Bundaberg Regional Council, and Elliott Heads and District Ratepayers and Residents Association.”
