A lifesaving food van will soon pull up at the Granite Creek Driver Reviver site thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers and a Gambling Community Benefit Fund grant.
Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said volunteers like Dawn Tattam and Hank from the Gin Gin Gypsies have gone above and beyond to keep motorists safe.
“In 2022 the Labor Government decided to make cuts and shut down several Driver Reviver Sites across the state,” said Mr Bennett
“It was a reckless, dangerous, and completely irresponsible decision and without our dedicated volunteers the hugely popular Granite Creek Driver Reviver site would be no more.
“Dawn, Hank and several community groups saw a disaster in the making and have been manning the site ever since.
“They have just been successful in a $35,900 Gambling Community Benefit Fund grant that will go towards the purchase of a food van for the site.
“I couldn’t be prouder of our community who are ready to jump in to help and support each other in times of need.
“Given the recent horror weeks on our roads, our driver reviver sites are more important than ever.”
Dawn Tattam from the Miriam Vale and District Community Shed and Heritage Group said it’s been a battle uphill since the site was closed by TMR.
“We’ve been using a pop-up pergola since Christmas last year, doing our best to help tired drivers on the road,” she said.
“This van will be the lifeline that our drivers need to stay safe and alert.
“We’re thrilled to be able to help our community and I look forward to saying hello with a cuppa to motorists traveling our roads these coming school holidays.
“A huge thank you must also go to Coles Tannum Sands, The Arnott’s Foundation, Bushells Tea and Coffee, and Sunshine Sugar who provide the hot drinks and snacks.”
The Granite Creek Volunteer Driver Reviver Site will be manned all three weekends of the September school holidays as well as the Kings Birthday long weekend from September the 13th to October the 7th.
