Are you looking for a social sport that improves your level of fitness, offers a full body workout and is a lot of fun?
Dragon boat racing could be for you.
Bundaberg Dragon Boat Club secretary Lesley Grimminck has extended an invitation for first timers to come and give the growing sport a go.
“It’s a sport that caters for any levels of fitness, male or female of any age. Our oldest member is 77 and our youngest is ten,” Mrs Grimminck said.
“If you’re prepared to give it a try, we’re proud to have you.
“It’s fun, it’s dynamic, it’s challenging… give it a go – you’ll love it.
“It’s more core fitness than anything. You don’t have to be athletic to be able to do it.”
She said now more than ever is the time to come and try the sport out, as the club looks to upgrade its facilities with the addition of a brand new 22 seat boat thanks to a state government grant.
The club is one of seven successful recipients in the region to share in more than $153,000 from the latest round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, recently announced by member for Burnett Stephen Bennett.
Mr Bennett said the club had been awarded $12,000 to purchase a brand new dragon boat which would replace one of the club’s aging boats.
“It’s a great little club and I’m proud to be able to continue to support them in improving their facilities and expanding membership,” Mr Bennett said.
“I’m all for supporting clubs which promote active, healthy lifestyles.
“Dragon Boat racing has such a rich history being a long standing Chinese Tradition that has quickly developed into a popular water sport around the world, and it’s wonderful to see the sport taking off right here in our region.
“It’s great to see such enthusiasm for the modern day dragon boats which has developed as a sport in its own right.”
Mrs Grimminck said the club was counting down the days until the new boat arrived.
“We’re really excited about it… it was great news to hear we had been awarded the grant,” she said.
Mrs Grimminck said newcomers were welcome to come and give the sport a try on Sundays at 8am. Lifejackets and paddles are provided.
