The Discovery Coast Community Health Service has re-opened its doors, despite community concerns the service would shut down.
Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett, who worked with the local council and interest groups to ensure the community would not lose the primary health service, reassured residents that they can expect to receive the same services, if not better.
“The health services will continue to be federally funded through the Central Queensland, Wide Bay, Sunshine Coast PHN, and will continue to trade under the Discovery Coast Community Health Service name,” he said.
“You will see the same familiar faces, but they will be wearing different uniforms and providing the same services residents have become accustomed to.
“I have been assured the new provider will ultimately provide enhanced services to the people of the Discovery Coast.”
Mr Bennett advised the community bus that was previously operating from the service will continue to be available to community groups in the interim.
He thanked all parties, including the local council, for ensuring the service was maintained in the Discovery Coast.
“I thank the Gladstone Regional Council for the smooth transition and ensuring the ongoing health service for the community.
“I was happy to work on the community’s behalf the community to ensure this vital service continues.
“This health service is particularly important for an isolated, growing community such as the Discovery Coast.”
PHN Area Manager for Wide Bay, Tracey Warhurst, said that she was delighted to be able to facilitate continuity of services to the Discovery Coast Community.
“We are committed to the provision of primary health services in rural and regional areas as it is proven to be one of the most efficient and effective ways to improve health outcomes for individuals and the broader community,” she said.
“We welcome IMPACT Community Services as the new service provider and look forward to working closely with them to high quality services that are responsive to the needs of the community.”
